(FROM THE MELBOURNE ARGUS.) ADELAJDE. October 22. The works for the LynJoch Valley Gold-mining Company are to be at once proceeded with. The specimens brought down are very good. Barton, the absconding insolvent, was brought up at the Police Court this morning, charged with unlawful appropriation, and remanded. A. dividend of L 5 per share in the Aloonta Mine was declared to-d;iy. The wheat market is quiet. Flour, LlO to Lll. There is a probability of Captain Cadell being sent to represent the Government in surveying the Northern Territory. The country everywhere is looking magnificent, and gives the highest promise of an abundiint harvist. It is anticipated that wheat wid be very cheap next year. Tlie " Register" to-day quotes sales of new wheat, deliverable in January, at 3s Gd per bushel. October 23. Strong opposition is being made t-> the establishment of tolls on the Port Jttoad. The question of the election of one candidate on two writs is to be brought before Parliament to-morrow. The laying of the pipes for water from the reservoir to Port Adelaide is now completed. Messrs Rooertsm and Co., cattle salesmen, have assigned their estate ; aud Messrs Ilarrold and Jenkins, ironmonger*, have been declared insolvent. At a meeting of the creditors of a wellknown geutU man, held this day, hin liabilities were staled to amount to LIB,OOO, and the whole of his acceptances were handed back to him as a present. Messrs Townseiid, Dotting, and Kaye sold by auctioti to-day the earyoof teas ex <Taze!le, from Foo-Chow-Fuo. Chests, brought LB, half -cheats, L 4 Is, aud boxes, 26s 6d. The Government call for tenders for the survey of 300,000 acres of landattlie Northern territory. Tlie Government al-o usk for fresh tenders, to be sent in until the Ist of November, for a si earner or a sailing vessel to proceed to Adam Bay and return. The Legislative Council has agreed that provision should be made forthwith for carrying on tho Northern Railway to Buna and Clare ; also for the construction of an iiMii line to the south-east, and one from Port Augusta or Port Ferguson for 200 mil sto the north. The Government has promised to introduce a bill for railway extension immediately. Wheat was sold to-day at 4s 3d., and flour at from LlO to Lll. October 24. Mr Reynolds's motion on the desirability of tree and unfettered interchange between the various colonies as regards colonial productions, and of the adoption of a uniform tariff in the Riverine trade, has been postponed. Dr Corbin, of Kooriuga, has been appointed resident surgeon to the hospital, vice Dr Peel, appointed assistant colonial surgeon in the South-eastern district. The debate on the Estimates as to the Volunteer department is likely seriously to affect the success of the movement, the majority of the speeches being dacided'y discouraging to the members of the forre. A meeting of the creditors of Messrs J. S. Saunders and Co., wholesale grocers, was held to-day. The liabilities are Ll-2,000, and the assets L6OOO. It was agreed to accept a composition of 6a 8d in the pound, guaranteed. The mining news from the peninsula is favorable, but all speculation is shires is at a standstill. Messrs Townseud and Fuller are as yet the only candidates for the mayoralty. The news from the far North is m>re encouraging ; rain has fallen in quantities, and feed is plentiful. The weather on the plains is fine, and the prospects of the crops are splendid. Wheat is scarce at 4s to 4s 3d ; hut there are no transactions. There is no demand for flour. Bran is dull at Is 2d. General business ia very dull, owing to a prevailing feeling of want of confidence. Trade, in fact, »s utterly paralysed. The bank rate of exchange at sixteen days' sight is U per cent, premium. Wirribarra Station, near Mount Remarkable, offered ut auction to-day, with 41,000 sheep and 1 4,000 acres of purchased laud, has been bought in for L 52,000.
