Th« Melbourne " Argus " of-Saturday last reports :—": — " In the- import markets a quiet day has been passed, as usually happens on the" day the English mails are despatched, nor do we/expect any renewed attention to business before another week sets in. In the market foe breadstuffs, sales of flour have been quite limited. Our range of quotations, however, remains uliuost unaltered) viz. ; — Ll4 ss. to Lls for country, and Lls 10s.<to Lls iss. for best town brands ; the latter figure being a shade under former sales of similar brands ; has been accepted to-day. A parcel of 6900 bushels Chilian wheat is said to have changed hands privately, at an advance on late sales ; the actual price paid was not allowed to transpire. In oats and barley, no transactions have been mado public. Maize is very firm, and really so'uhd qualities are wanted at 4s 3d to 4s 6d, according to quantity. Cornsacks have been inquircd\for, and we hear of some small parcels having been placed ut 13s 6d. Currants a v c scarce, and wanted. A shipment just landing has been quitted at -lid, but most holders to arrive anticipate getting more money. Kerosene oil is firmer ; one sale of about 600 cases have been effected at 3s 3d, buyers iv need being compelled to give this figure. Of bulk ales, we learn of a shipment of about a hundred hhds. of Bass's light palo ale having changed hands, to arrive, at a price fully supporting L 7 10s — tho rate hitherto required on the spot. A parcel of Hennessy's case brandy has been- placed at 275. At auction some 11G8 half-chests and 393 chests old eea6ou's .teas, ex Alexandra, found buyers at, prices which slmv a decline. Somo 150 packages hulf-chcsts and boxi's now- season's toas, ex Charlotte, sold privntcly, brought la >10d to* Is 10-id , :nul up to 2iM ; and a Hue of '100 boxes ex Eltrick wa^ disposed of at a prico withheld, but said to be about" 2s 2d in bond. \VV .»ro ulso informed that a> portion of the tej&s sold by unction was afterwards resold at an adviince. The Egean's cbrgo of Mauritius sugitrs wus offered for sale under the hammer. The cargo consisted of 5037 bagg, but tho auctioneers succeeded in quitting only about 2100 bags, at late rates. By granting a blight concession tho •whole quantity might easily have been disposed of, but this was refused. Tho Stag's cargo of ' Java producn, consisting of sugnr and rice principally, is to bo ollerei by public sale on Tuesday next."
