COMMERCIAL INTELLIGENCE.
Wkst Coast Times Office, Friday Evening. *rhc amount v of import duty collected n't the Custom House to-day wns x LIBI 13s 7it. The following lißt of mcrcliaiuliao cleared shows itn distribution : —
Business for the current week has scarcely maintained the activity noted in our last report, the new Tariff, which came into operation on the 29th ultimo, having very immaterially affected the markets. The state df the entrance has somewhat interfered with the amount of business that, otherwise, would have been effected. Several-vessels having been detained outside ior some days, has caused buyers to stand aloof from operating. Appearances inuicate more facility for shipping coming to the wharf, and considerable activity may be anticipated for the next few days.
We have to note a very steady and satisfactory business for the current week ; but little change is apparent in prices for major articles.
Provisions have been "freely offered . vfcithout material alteration. Sinclair's hams and bacon have realised Is 4d to Is
5d per lb. Butter has been more freely offered-; good parcels having found buyers 2d 4d to 2s sd. Cheese lias realised our last quotations, showing an upward tendency." -Oilmen'.s stores have been neglected, the supply being in excess of 'demand. Candles have been freely offered, without much attention from buyers, the tendency being downwards. Oats : The 'considerable supp'y of this article, as noted in Our last, has been increased in the interval, and the market weakened consequently . A parcel'of, Calif orniau sold at ship's bide for 6s lOd per bushel ; 7s is now asked for good parcels of Tateri, which, compared with the value in Otago, leaves scarcely any margin. Potaiod have slightly improved, ahd may be quoted, for good samples, L 7 per ton. "
Flour remains without change, ini ports during the week having been light, ahd no alteration can be noted. We still, quote Adelaide at L'2l per ton •, Chilian, Ll9.
Bran remains as last quoted. '. -' Wines aud spirits are without, material alteration. 1 ' The price of first-class brandies is in favor of buyers. Outside brands not enquired for. \ There has been more enquiry for firstclass wines. Fine sherries are saleable at Lib' to L-18 per qr.-cask, d.p. Case wines not enquired for.
Beer in glass is meeting with better demand. Blood's and Byass' having the preference. Beer in bulk is readily placed, our local beer still , maintaining the preference. ".
