Sept. 26th, 1866. % 4593 HOKITIKA MUNICIPALITY 6 TO THE ELECTORS. pENTLEMEN,— I beg sincerely to thauk you for the honor you have done me in electing me as one of your representatives in the Municipal Council. This is a result I can conscientiously say I did not expect ; for, as a rule, journalists who pursue their profession fearlossly and independently, cannot nvoid creating a considerable amount of hostility in various quarters— a disadvantage from which gentlemen engaged in mercantile and trading pursuits are wholly free. It is, therefore, most gratifying to me to find that, notwithstanding a well organised and exceedingly active opposition, I have been placed in such an honorable position by so large a number of the qualified electors. ' * I am still of opinion that the present : election, in which only 117 persons were permitted to vote, cannot be considered as a satisfactory or conclusive reflex of the choice of the ratepayers ; and I hope to convince my fellow Councillors that as soon as a Ratepayers' Roll has been Completed, they ought to afford the whole body of electors the chance of confirming or annulling 'the acts of the present limited body of voters, by a new general flection.
