The Melbourne " Arfus" of the 20 S/pt. j reports '-^ 'In the import markets to-day a fair amount of business has been done, a tolerably active trade demand having been maintained at fair rates ; while the larger buyers have in addition, more disposition to operate whenever anything of a tempting nature has been offered. „ The market for breadstuff's is exceedingly dull, and to meet buyers a slight concession on Hart's (lour lias had to be submitted to sales to-day not having exceeded Ll6. For country brands we quote Llo. After yosterday's sale of, Chilian wheat, the market has settled down to a decline of 3d per bushel for sound. -Port MacDonucll and Californian wheat command 6s 9d. Some 12,000 bushels Chilian wheat are a^ain advertised for auction sale on Friday next. In barley, there is an improved business, though at most unsatisfactory prices. A parcel of about 5000 bushels changed hands on private terms, and a smaller lot of a thousand bifeheU was quitted at 4s net. Maize is disposed of at 4s 4d to 4s 6d. Congou teas still meet with a fair enquiry ut Is Gl for rations,-in chests, while trade parcels of new season's congous have abo been placed at 2s 3d, duty., paid. "Sugars arc in good request for brewing ; .some 800 bags yellow crystals have been quitted at L 33 to*L3s 10s. In liquids, there is more business doing. Of the Carlisle Company's ale sales ai'e reported at L 7 ss. We also hear of Joule's ,ale finding buyers at L 7 y l2s 6d. Holders ofPunphy's stout having reduced their price to 9s to 9s ,3d, several hundred case parcels have been disposed of at the figures named, according to quality. The agent's price for Blood's is stated to be 10s 3d to 10s 6d, and oilers x of less money have been frequently refused yi the course of the day: In provisions wo hear of about 150 cases SinoL'ir's hams and bacon having been sold in a line to arrive. There is little demandwith the trade yet, but full i-ates are realised, say up to Is 2d to Is 3d for any" disposal of on the spot. Kerosene oil has gone olf more freely, though lower rates have been accepted to elfect sales. About 1000 cases Downer's have been sold in pai'cels at 3s. Sales of oysters continue to bo reported at 10s 6cl. A shipment of 311 cases American chairs has been quitted at up to twenty per cent, on invoice, for a portion, and a smaller advance on the remainder.'
