MEETING OF THE FIRE BRIGADE.
A speoial meeting of the Fire Brigade wa9 held at the Cleveland Hotel, oh the evening of the 22nd inst. . In the absence of Capiain Mijlard, Lieut, Horn occupied tlio chair. He informed th 6 meeting It was caliefl pUrpdsely that certain tenders from Melbourne for supplying a fire-engine to the brigade might be submitted to it. Besides this, there was other, but less important business to be transacted.
The honorary secretary being called upon, opened and read the tenders; the first being from Mr J. S. Dunks, offering to supply afire-engine and bells, hose, &c, complete, for the sum of L 270. The second tender was from the secretary of the Emerald Hill Fire Brigade, who had a second-hand engine, in thorough repair, fire bells, and a defective hose, to dispose of for L 165. Tho .thiti teridqr sent in by the RtclimondTdwii Clerk, who also had a second-hand engine and defective hose to dispose of tor LIOO. After a lengthy discussion, it was moved by Mr Shields, seconded by Mr Maguire, and carried, that the honarary secretary bo instructed to write to Messrs Spence Bros., in Melbourne, requesting them to inspect the three engines, taking note of thoir condition, weight, &c, and forward a report of same to the Hokitika brigade. It was resolved tliat Captain Millard be instructed to collect from the parties who had engaged the Engine House the rent duo thereon, and if it was not at once paid that legal proceedings should be instituted 'against them for ifs recovery. Also, that the treasurer be empowered to pay the Engine House keeper's salary on receiving a certificate from the captain. A letter from Captain Millard, who therein tendered his resignation of the post, was then read, when, upon tho motion of Mr Hudson, which was seconded by Mr Maguire, and carried, it was decided that the consideration of the letter should be deferred until the next meeting of the brigade at which Captain Millard be requested to attend. , % A vote of thanks to the chairman terminated the proceedings.
