Information has been received at tbo Adtolr/ilfrr that' H.M.S, Salamander, January fi),

tlio Blarkwood channel, on tho route recommended, from Raino Island towards the Middle Bank, struck on an unknown coral patch, with only seven foot on ila shoalcgt purt at low water. The patch lies about a niilo E.S.E. of the eastern part of tlio Middle Banke, or in Int. lldcg. -17inin. lOsec. S. 5 lon. 143d0g. 4lmin. 35sec. E. It is about 230 yards long, cast and west, 110 yjvds wide, hoa ton to soventeon fathoms nil round it, and fiftoon to seventeen fathoms in the channel, a milo wide, botweon it and tlio roof in connection with tho eastern sand bank on tho Middle Banks. From its shoaleßt spot of sovon feet, tho contro of the eastorn sand bank on tho Middle Banks bears W. £ N., distnut two and a half miles, and tho south extreme of Sir Charles Hardy lslandi S.W. fourteen and a half Miles. VesßoU ontcring tho Groat Barrior Roof by tho Raino Island entrance, should, as soon as possible after passing north or bou*U of Raine Island, bring its beacon to boar N. E. £ E., Bteoring S.W. •} W. (allowing for tido and a northerly set) for Sir Charlos Hardy Islands. As soon us tho beacon is lost sight of, tho vessol will bo clear of tho Bhoal patches westward of the 100 fathoms lino of soundings, ami m tho bank. Look out now for Sir Charlos Hnrdy Islands, and when they are plainly soon, stcev for their south oxtremo on a S.W. $ VV. bearing, and when tho easternMost sandbank on tho middle banks boar N. \V. by W., and Iho west Ashmoro bank (if ai-en S.S.W. 4 W., tho vessel will bo well to tho south-west of tho Salamundoi 1 patch, and a course may then be shaped for cither tho north or Pollard channels.
