WANGANUI CRICKET SIDE MAKES 225 AGAINST MANAWATU

PALMERSTON NORTH, Last Night (Special).—At the close of the first day's play in a Manawatu-Wanganui two-day cricket match, the result of the game is still very much in the balance. A bad start saw Wanganui in a weak position, but a fine recovery saw them compile a respectable 225, of which Doel contributed a fine 56. L. Scott was Manawatu’s most sue cesstul bowler, taking four wickets for 63 runs off 33 overs. At stumps Mana- , watu were 58 for the loss cf two ' wickets. Wanganui's openers, Bergescn and Jones were not untroubled by the attack of Campbell and McLeod. Despite the fact that Manawatu’s bowling was far from hostile, runs came slowly and Bergeson brightened things up with a lovely cover drive to the fence off Harford. Scott replaced Campbell from the other end and Bergeson pulled a full toss off his fifth ball hard to Harford at square leg, who fumbled and dropped the ball. Bergeson lofted the next ball over the fence for a glorious mid-wicket six. Scott had his revenge in the next over, however, when he clean bowled Bergeson with a ball that whipped back sharply from the off. Dryberg joined Jones with 33 runs on the board, Bergeson having scored 19. Dryberg brought 50 up with a single and then Scott broke the partnership when he had Jones lbw after this batsman had made a solid 19. Poananga's stay at the crease was shori lived, for in attempting to square cut, he was caught behind by Colquohoun for two, giving Scott his third wicket and Wanganui’s score stood at three for 61. Wallace was the next man in, and steady bowling by Scott and McLeod kept the rate of scoring down, Scott getting a surprising lift off the pitch with spinners and his length now was much more consistent. Dryberg reached his twenties with a pull to the boundary and a few runs later tried a similar shot off Scott, but skied It and Pollitt, running in fast from the outfield, took a beautiful catch from down near his ankles. Wanganui had now lost four wickets for 70 runs. Joel was the next man out of the pavilion and, with Wallace, put on 11 runs. Wallace scoring 10 of them with powerful driving. He was caught and bowled by McLeod before he could add to this score, on the last ball before lunch, the score then reading five for 81. STEADY SCORING—JOEL AND BEARD. Joel continued after lunch with Beard as his partner and steady scoring saw the 100 come up when Beard drove Scott for a single and Joel glanced him to reach double figures. A short ball from Scott saw Joel open his shoulders and sky the ball over the deep square leg’s head for a six. Both batsmep were punishing Scott’s bowling and he was replaced by Harford. Runs continued to come, however, and the two were unseparated at 150, when McVicar was brought on. Joel reached his half century with four off Harford, having been dropped once in the slips at 46. Hartord claimed his first wicket when he had Joel caught behind for a grand knock of 56. His partnership v’ith Beard had put on 83 runs. The score then was six for 164. Beard and Hall were now associated, the latter showing a decided inclination to use a long handle. Beard edged one to Harford in the slips off McVicar after he had made 31. Haji. with Uluiviti, took the score along to 204 when the former skied one to Wilde off McLeod at 210. Hall’s successor, Brown, was bowled by a ball from Harford that swung late and, 15 runs later, the last man in, McDougal, was caught off McLeod, Uluiviti carrying his bat for a wellstroked 15.

Donald and McVicar opened for Manawatu against the bowling of Beard and Uluiviti. McVicar started off at an' unusually brisk pace, and both he and Donald were batting confidently when Poananga caught Donald leg before with 29 runs on the board. Bowden was the next in, but after scoring only two runs, was out leg before to Beard, with 38 runs up. Partnered by Pollitt, McVicar moved the score along steadily till stumps, when Manawatu’s score read two for 58. Details: — WANGANUI.
