Big Fire Causes £200,000 Damage In Melbourne

MELBOURNE, Dec. 26 (Recd. 8 pm).—One of the city’s biggest fires lor many years this afternoon destroyed Prahran markets and 12 shops, causing damage estimated at more than £200,000 A huge crowd watched the fire and before the police intervened looter* smashed shop windows and seized goods. Four brigades, totalling 200 men, assisted by 300 civilians, fought the outbreak and many small fires which occurred when sparks landed on roofs of nearby houses. Smoke billowed to more than 1000 feet and the roof of the market building collapsed, spraying the area with blazing wood. When the brigades seemed to have the blaze in one area under control the water supply ceased and the advantage was lost. Markets were stocked with meat and vegetables brought in for Thursday’s sale. Apart from the premises totally destroyed. six shops, two homes and a furniture factory were damaged.
