“CHRONICLE” CAR DELIVERS THE MAIL TO MAIN TRUNK AREA
Every effort ta maintain normal mail services is being made by the Post and Telegraph Department, while the national train strike continues. With the help of newspaper delivery services and buses, first-class mail is being delivered o*n schedule. The Wellington-New Plymouth area is being served by a Wellington newspaper delivery car, the “Chronicle” car is taking mail to Marton, Taihape, Ohakune, Raetihi and intervening places in the Main Trunk, a'nd a bus service maintains contact between Wanganui and Palmerston North.
A department lorry transports sec-ond-class mail from Wellington to Wanganui and another connects with Wanganui from New Plymouth. Air freight services will carry mail from the North to the South island. Prior to the strike taking effect at midnight on Saturday the Post Office made every endeavour to clear the mail room. Repercussions from the strike, therefore, have not as yet been felt, because of the infrequency with which the mail would have been cleared in any case over the Christmas holidays. w The chief postmaster (Mr. W O’Connell) said last night that he did not expect any difficulty in disposing of the mail.
