TRUMAN SETS UP BODY TO LINK THE FREE WORLD
WASHINGTON, Dee. 22 (Reed. 11.55 p.m.).—President. Truman has created a new committee to coordinate the United .States Government’s military relationships with the rest of the free world. The new body is the Committee on International Security Affairs, and will operate as part of the State Department. Mr. Truman has appointed a Boston industrialist, and banker, Mr Thomas Dudley Cabot, its chairman. Mr. Cabot will have the title of Director for International Security Affairs. The committee will consist of representatives of the State, Defence and Treasury Departments, the Economic Co-operation Administration and the office of Mr. Averell Harriman, special adviser to the President for coordination of foreign policy.
A White House statement on ;he new committee said its func:iou would be to handle internarional security matters and military economic assistance for mutual defence. This would include military and political alianee, such as the North Atlantic Treaty organisation and economic rid programme.
