FINE OF £50 FOR ALLOWING OIL TO ESCAPE IN HARBOUR
AUCKLAND, Last Night (P.A.).— For allowing oil to escape in the Auckland harbour, Olav Jorgen Lauvrak, master of the ship Camp Union, was fined £5O in the Police Court today. The prosecution was brought by the harbour board. Counsel for the board (Mr. Forder) said that while the ship was taking in oil fuel at the Western wharf on Monday last, a ton of oil went into the harbour. There was a fortunate change of wind, and all was recovered after four or five hours’ work. The cost to the board was £26 6s. Defence counsel (Mr. Lusk) said there was an absolute liability on the master of the ship, but the trouble was due to an air lock, and not to negligence. The magistrate also ordered the master to pay the costs incurred by the board.
