National Theatre On The Thames Will Take Three Years To Build
LONDON, Dec. 19.—The King will lay the foundation stone of Britain’s national theatre—expected to be the best in Europe—on the Festival of Britain site on the south bank of the Thames on July 13 at the height of the festival celebrations The building will contain two theatres, with seating for 1200 and 500, and have accommodation for workshops and stores. All departments for housing and operating a full-scale repertory company would be provided in addition to conference room, library, canteens and restaurant. The work will take three years. The National Theatre Act, which Parliament passed last year, authorises the Government to contribute £1,000,000 towards the cost of building the theatre.
Mr. Kenneth Ray, spokesman for the Joint Council of the National Theatre and. Old Vic, said: “There will be facilities for rehearsing and training for more than one company. Our ultimate aim is three companies, one playing in London, one in the provinces and one abroad.”
