WOMEN’S INSTITUTES

WESTBOL’RNE. ' The final meeting of the year combined with a Christmas party was held by the Westbourne Women's Institute in the Castlecliff Hall, there being a ' large attendance, including a number of children who were specially invited. In her welcome Mrs Uttley mentioned Mrs M. Hartwell (Wellington) and the children. Mrs K. Prowse was in charge of the trading table and Mrs. Chant the competitions. A social competition was won by Mrs C. Christie. Mrs prowse gave an account of the beautiful arts and crafts done by an up-river Maori organisation and which she and Mrs Chant had recently judged. Items were given by Mrs Atkinson (songs) accompanied by Miss M. Swann: Miss Aylene Gaston (pianoforte solo), Harvey Prowse '(haka in character), and Miss Muriel Swann’s pupils entertained with various dances. The latter were presented with lollle bouquets and “sweety men figures" made by Mrs C. Stilborn and Mrs Cox. Following afternoon tea Mesdames Uttley and Prowse deputised for Father Christmas and presented gifts, first to the children and then to members. Mrs Copp presented a bouquet to Mrs Ultley. Competitions: Art and Crafts judged by Mrs F. Woodley, Mrs W. Gillies 1, Mrs K. Prowse 2, Mrs Uttley 3. Gladioli (Miss N.Z.) judged by Mrs Stewart, Mrs Ogier 1, Mrs Uttley 2, Mrs F. Lee 3. Best bloom, Mrs Swan 1, Mrs Christie 2, Mrs Stilborn 3. OHINGAITI. There was a large gathering of members at the December meeting ot the Ohingaiti Women’s Institute. Miss Stent presided and welcomed all present. Many beautiful blooms were entered in the rose display, Mrs Worsfold winning the points prize, with Miss Stent and Mrs Peffers, equal 2. Birthday sprays were presented to three members. The second part of the afternoon was for the children. They gave a number of items including several sketches. The most looked forward-to item was the special afternoon tea followed by ice creams and a bag of sweets each. The teachers were presented with sprays. The competition results were: Premier vegetable, Mrs Maher 1, Miss Stent 2. Premier flower, Mrs Stent 1, Mrs Worsfold and Miss Stent equal 2. Summer sweet, Mrs Worsfold 1, Mrs Redman 2. At the November meeting which was international day, a “penny for friendship" collection was taken up. Spring cleaning hints was the wellresponded to roll call. Competiitons were: Best flower, Mrs Cooper 1, Mrs Worsfold 2. Best vegetable, Mrs Worsfold 1, Mrs Maher 2. Oven cloth, Mrs Cooper and Miss Stent equal 1, Mrs Worsfold 2.
