FREEZING INDUSTRY LAGGING BEHIND LAST SEASON’S OUTPUT
Seasonal conditions have greatly influenced the freezing industry in Wanganui this year. Lambs have been much slower coming forward to the New Zealand Refrigeration Co.’s Imlay Works than in previous seasons. The works have only half a chain in operation at present.
However, the dry, north-westerly wind has dried up the coastal areas to such an extent that a considerable flow of young stock is expected at the works next week. Two chains will be brought on then. No indication is yet available concerning when the company will be in full production with four chains, but it is expected that this will be some time after New Year. The seasonal labour market is as yet ungauged and no information about its strength will be available until the company assumes full production.
The stock coming forward so far has been mostly lambs with a sprinkling of ewes.
