Mr C. R; Wilson, of Whakatane, has been appointed a part-time member of the Rehabilitation Board.
Mr T. A. Bishop has been elected deputy-chairman of the Auckland Harbour Board.
Mr E. H. Mikdal, Commissioner ot Police in South Africa, who lias beer, visiting the Dominion, has left for Sydney Dr. G. H. Green, senior registrar ot the Obstetrical and Gynaecological Unit at the Cornwal Hospital, Auckland, has-been elected a member of the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists of England. Mr R. M. Murray, the Wellington cricket representative player, who was injured during the recent Flunked Shield match against Central Districts, will be out of action for ' l.t least two weeks.
The Minister of Defence (Mr Macdonald) will leave Auckland today by flying-boat for Sydney as a member of the New Zealand delegation to a meeting of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association to be held in Canberra. The Minister of Lands and Maori Affairs (Mr Corbett) will visit Massey Agricultural College at Palmerston North this morning, and subsequently attend the annual prize-giving of the Turalfina Maori Girls’ College. Mrs Corbett will present the prizes. Mr. R. F. Wakefield is appointed Deputy-Resident Commissioner of Rarotonga, states last night’s Gazette. The appointment of Judge Alfred McCarthy in that position is revoked by another notice published in the Gazette.
Lieut.-Commander J. F. A. O’Neill. D.S.C., R.N.Z.N., has retired after 10 years’ naval service Since 1949 he has held the appointments of commander at the Devonport Dockyard, deputy-superintendent of the dockyard, and King’s Harbourmaster at Auckland.
Mr V. Smith (Taihape) was elected chairman of the Rangitikei County council at its annual meeting yesterday. He is the- first councillor from the northern portion of the county to hold the office of chairman. Cr. A. S. Coleman, who also has had long service on the council, was elected deputy-chairman.
Mr L. M. Hailas, honorary secretary of the Wanganui Competitions. Society, in consequence of accepting a position with the State Coal Department, has resigned. His resignation has been accepted with regret, the president of the society (Mr E, Lind) paying a high tribute to Mr Hailas work at the recent revival festival. Widely known for his association with racing and bowls, Mr. Alf Dickson died yesterday in Christchurch at the age 78. For 63 years, Mr. Dickson was actively engaged as a journalist, and up to the time of his death was still the Christchurch correspondent for a number of newspapers. Mr. Dickson began his career in journalism in Dunedin, and came to Christchurch in 1900 to join the "Canterbury Times.’’ Later he was racing reporter on the “Lyttelton Times" and “Stir," and finally was on the “Star-Sun" until his retirement in 1939.
