GOOD CITIZENSHIP KEYNOTE OF SPECIAL CHURCH SERVICE

Good citizenship was the keynote of a special civic service held in Christ Church last evening. The service was conducted by the vicar, the Rev. J. R. L. Higgs, and among the large congregation were the Mayor of Wanganui, Hon. W. J. Rogers, M.L.C., city and their wives, executive officers and also chairman and members of other local bodies in Wanganui and district.

The service had added significance because it was held only three weeks after the local body elections. Among the congregation were some who were taking office on local authorities for the first time.

The Mayor read the First Lesson, and the Second Lesson was read by the Deputy-Mayor, Cr. R. E. jack. Special prayers were offered to invoke God’s blessing or, the work of local bodies during their new term of office. The town clerk, Mr. C. R. White, who is a lay reader at Christ Church, conducted part of the service.

The vicar’s sermon was under three headings—vi.'on, service and motive. “The object of this service is tc bring before the people the work of our civic authorities, to remind us ot the service rendered by those bodies tnat we so often take for granted, and perhaps to remind members of the bodies, themselves of their duties to the people and the high motives which should inspire them in all they endeavour to do,’’ said the vicar.

Representing the City Council at the service were the Mayor, DeputyMayor and tow" clerk, together with councillors and their wives and executive officers. Also present were members of the Counties of Wanganui and Waitotara, the Wanganui Harbour Board, the Wanganui Hospital Board and the Wanganui-Rangitikei Power Board.

Included among them were the chairman of the Wanganui County, Mr. A. H. Collins, and the county clerk, r. S. L. Orr, the chairman of the Waitotara County, Mr. G. Palmer, and the county clerk, Mr. W. B. Broadhead, the chairman of the Wanganui Harbour Board, Mr. E. A. Millward, and the secretary of the Power Board, Mr. G. Ammundsen. Mrs A. H.
