Some British M.P.'s Against Use Of The Atomic Bomb
LONDON, Dec. 1 (Rec. 8 pm).— Mr. Julius Silverman (Labour) said, in the House of Commons, that the use of the atom bomb would simply result in competition. If the Americans had 500 atom bombs and the Russians 50, it would be the crowded, teeming industrial areas of Britain which would get. the 50. Several Labour members of Parliament signed, or gave support to, a letter of protest drafted to the Prime Minister. The letter is believed to demand that British troops be pulled out of Korea immediately if a decision to use the atom bomb is left in the hands of General MacArthur. Conservative members were shocked by the report. One leading member of the party said: President Truman’s statement does not seem to be in the same lune or key as Mr. Bevin's speech on Korea.” Mr. Attlee’s decision to meet President Truman emphasises ihe serious view taken by Britain of the present world crisis. There have been reports from London- not denied here —that the British Government has not been entirely pleased with the direction of the Korean War under General MacArthur’s command. The British have been privately cautioning ton American leaders for some time against going 100 far in Korea. They argued, before General MacArthur’s latest abortive offensive that any overt action might bring the Chinese Communists ollicially into the war.
