Firemen Welcome Rain

Rain last night was welcome to officers and men of the Wanganui Fire Brigade, who have had a succession of grass fires during the past few days, due to the hot, dry weather. Yesterday, they had four calls, three of them to grass fires, and one the result of a technical fault in an automatic alaifn at a timber yard. The first call was at 7.30 ri.m. to the railway line in Hatrick Street, the second was at 1.23 p.m. to the railway line at Ingestre Street near College Street, and one minute later a call was received to the City Council yards in Redgway Street Extension. A grass fire had started under a fence and some wooden railings were slightly damaged. The fourth call was at 3.52 p.m. to Bassett and Co., Ltd. timber yard, three machines responding because the alarm came from an industrial area. The call was due to a fault in the alarm system. Art Union Funds. The payment of £14,480 from art union funds to 117 organisations engaged in charitable and welfare activities has been authorised, the Minister of Internal Affairs (Mr Bodkin) announced yesterday. The grants vary from £5 to £lOOO, and practically a third of the amount is devoted to the welfare of children. The New Zealand Crippled Children Society and the Commandery of the Order of St. John both receive £lOOO. Mr Bodkin said the proceeds of one art union would go to the Children’s Health Camp movement.
