Marching Competitions At Taihape
TAIHAPE, Last Light (OCX— Coluurrul pageantry was seen at the Taihape Domain on Saturday on the occasion of the girls’ open marching competition and display held under the auspices of the Otaiiiape Marching Association. The programme commenced with a grand march led by the Taihape Municipal Band. The following teams participated:—Majestic Midgets (Taihape), Ohakea Debonairs (Ohakea), Texas Rangers (Wanganui), Auisebrooks (Wellington), Civic (New Plymouth), Bandoliers (Otaki), Lancasters (Palmerston North), Alexander Clarkes (Palmerston North) Earthworks (Palmerston North), Sargettes (Wellington), Broadway (Marton), Regal (Taihape) and D.I.C. (Wanganui). The Manawatu Pipe Band also took part in the march past.
The open marching competition resulted in a win for the New Zealand champions, Sargettes. of Wellington, who gave an outstanding performance. Bandoliers (O.axi) were second and Texas Rangers ’.Wanganui) filled third position. Sargettes gave a special display of ma’’eb:r.g at the conclusion of the competition. The judges vere Messis F. Carrington, of Levin .chief judge), L. H. Clark (Hamilton!, C Culpan and V. Crawshaw ’.Wanganui) and J. Macfar'a (Levin). The pace counter was Mr L. J. Patrick, jun., president of the Otaiiiape Marching Association. Mr K W. Kilpatrick, secretary of the N.Z. Marching Association, was present 'to assist the secretary of the local association, Mr E. J. Duffy. The costumes were judged by Mesdames R. E. Fmery and D. Barton. The Majestic Midgets did not take part in the open competition, but gave a special marching display. The pageant concluded with a special massed display by ail teams. The trophies were presented by the Mayor, Mr E. Loader. Results are as follow: Open Marching Competition: Sargettes (Wellington) 1, Bandoliers (Otaki) 2, Texas Rangers (Wanganui) 3. The winning team was presented with the Needham Cup. Each member of the team also received a medal. The second team also received medals. Leaders’ Competition: Jill Bartlett (Ohakea Debonairs) 1, J. M. Flowers (Lancasters, Palmerston North) 2, F. McLeod (Sargettes, Wellington) 3. Aggregate Points Prizes: Sargettes (4041 points) 1, Bandoliers (385 ) 2, Texas Rangers (3815), 3. Total Points for Marching: Sargettes (Wellington), 3015 points; Bandoliers (Otaki), 283; Texas Rangers (Wanganui), 2795; Auisebrooks (Wellington), 272; Ohakea Debonairs, 265; Lancasters (Palmerston North), 267; Earthworks (Palmerston North), 2615; D.I.C. (Wanganui), 260; Civic (New Plymouth), 2535; Alexander Clarke's (Palmerston North), 251; Broadway (Marton), 248.
Best Costumes: Sargettes (95 points) 1. Auisebrooks (825) 2, Bandoliers (2901) 3. Leader Points: Ohakea Debonairs (107 points) 1, Lancasters (104) 2, Sargettes (103) 3, Texas Rangers, Bandoliers and D.I.C. (102) equal 4th.
