SANDY'S CORNER SOAP BOX DERBY Who was it conceived the idea of having a soap box derby on election day? Is it a touch of poetic justice, or what? And it is to be held within a stone's throw of the main polling booth in the city, too. We suggest that the Garrison Band arrange a special race on derby day—a race from the Sarjeant Gailery steps down to the corner of the National Bank of the Tote Isles—Bill in a soap box of red and Lex in one of blue, special prize for the best decorated cart. Ye gods! A soap box derby on election day! N.Z.'s NEW "RABBITISED” SPORTING EMBLEM. The Tote Isles' "fur coat" contributors, the rabbits, are causing worry again. This time to a Tutaenui type who signs himself "A Would-be Shooter," in the first instance, and, in the second instance, “I Will Shoot Her." He says that the Hunterville Rabbit Board has prohibited the shooting of rabbits after the 30th of November, and he quotes a newspaper advertisement as his authority. "Can you," he asks us, “tell me what it all means? I have always thought that rabbits had become a national menace, but now I see that I must grow by lettuce patch as best I can, and let the rabbits have their share. I daren't shoot!" Well, all we can say to Tutaenui is that we believe seme “killer" game is on against the rabbits, but we are inclined to think that people are at last realising that the nature of this New Zealand is changing. We are a country of racing, Rugby and rabbits, and he who dares to shoot any one ol the three is in danger. The .only advice to Tulaenui “Would-be Shooter" is not to shoot if the rabbit attacking the lettuce is in the area where Hunterville says the rabbits must not be shot. If you see a rabbit attacking the lettuce, ring up the police or the board, but don’t shoot! Remember the rabbit is part of your country's sporting emblem now, na much a part as the kiwi ever was!
