BRITAIN IS RAPIDLY USING UP HER RESERVES OF MEAT
LONDON, Nov. 6.—Britain is using up her reserves of meat at a rate of more than 3000 tons a week, states the “Meat Trades Journal.” I t adds that 300,000 tons more meat has been consumed this year in Britain than in the same period of 1949. To meet this, increases in home production and imports have amounted to 170,000 tons. “Thus we have eaten into reserves to the extent of 170,000 tons,” says the journal. Referring to the deadlock in negotiations with Argentina, the journal says: “From the latest returns of consumption and supplies it would appear that some further reduction will be necessary in the rate of consumption before long.” Despite the substantially increased shipments from Australia and New Zealand, the gap in supplies could hardly be filled from any other source than South America. Leading meat traders fear that the British ration will be reduced by 4d to Is 2d this winter if a settlement is not reached with Argentina.—Special NZPA Correspondent.
