State Tenants With Larger Houses Than They Need Asked To Change

WELLINGTON, Nov. 6 (PA). — “State house tenants occupying houses larger than they now require are being encouraged to transfer to smaller ones to help ease the housing shortage,” said the Minister in Charge of the State Advances Corporation, Mr J. R. Marshal], today. “Tenants making such transfers will not be asked to pay the new rate of rental,” said the Minister.

A number of State house tenants had through changes in family circumstances more room than they now needed, and it had been decided that where they were prepared to accept transfers to smaller houses they would be encouraged to do so by allowing such transfers on the basis of the old scale of rental charges. This had been decided on because while the present housing shortage lasted the best use had to be made of all available accommodation. Mr Marshall said he felt that with this encouragement widows, retired persons and people whose families had grown up and gone away might seize the opportunity of transferring to smaller houses, thus securing a reduced rent. On the other hand, State tenants with growing families should now have a better chance of getting he larger houses they needed. State tenants willing to consider transfers on these conditions should get in touch with the local office of the State Advances Corporation. The old scale of rentals does not apply in respect of houses occupied since April 1, 1950.
