SKILLED WORKERS FOR JURY SERVICE OPPOSED BY MR. S. J. SULLIVAN

“There is a lot of hardship in town by taking skilled men out of factories for jury work, especially when there is such a shortage of labour,” Mr. SJ. Sullivan told the Wanganui Chamber of Commerce on Tuesday night. “Some recommendation should be made to the sergeant of police that he should exercise his discression in not calling skilled workers in industry for jury service,” he said. Mr. C. E. Jeffs: There is always the right of appeal. Mr. R. G. Taiboys: It is not equally as bad for the principal of a firm to be called?

“It is one of the duties we as citizens have to do,” said the chairman, Mr. G. G. Burgess. “As the chamber is representative of all sections of commerce how can we ask that one section should be exempted. Mr. N. M. Izard said that the duties should be spread more widely and that not more than one man should be called from one firm. “A good jury is composed of a cross section of the community,” he added. The chamber appointed Mr. Izard and the chairman to interview the registrar with a view to getting a more equitable distribution of jury representation.
