First Enemy Jet Planes Attack U.S. Mustangs

SEOUL, Nov. 1 (Recd. 12.10 am).— The first enemy jet fighters in action in Kore a were reported dog-fighting with American Mustangs and jet FBo’s over Sonchon today. Reports to the United States sth Air Force headquarters in Korea said six enemy jets jumped a flight of six American Mustangs near Sonchon. American FSO’s engaged the enemy planes. Soon after the action started conventional enemy fighters also were reported in the battle. An air fight over the United States 24th Division tank column followed a sweep by 13 FSO’s of Sinuiju airfield, in which eight enemy planes were reported destroyed. One pilot estimated there were 20 to 25 enemy aircraft o.n the field, which he said was protected by intense anti-aircraft fire. Sinuiju field is only nine air miles from the large Chinese airbase across the Yalu River, which separates Korea and Manchuria.—Associated Press.
