INCREASING SKI-ING ACTIVITY

ON MOUNT RUAPEHU RAETIHI, Last Night, (O.C.) —Commenting at the annual meeting of the National Park Board on the past season’s ski-ing at Mt. Ruapehu, the Chateau manager, Mr. L. Denness, said there had been a considerable increase compared with other seasons, specially at week-ends. Chateau huts had been in constant demand, in addition to those from more distant places and those located at mountain huts there had been regularly patronised. Chateau resources had been strained and financial returns had been high. The year had been a particularly bad one from the snow angle but this had been overcome by the tows being installed on the higher levels. The services of the overseas instructor, Mr. Walter Haensli, had been used to the full in the development of tows and other appointments, and today, said Mr. Denness, we have no better ski-ing facilities in the Dominion or even in Australia, than those at Ruapehu. Mr. Syme, Ski Council representative on the Park Board, said that in more recent times ski-ing had increased in popularity by 100 per cent.
