RATEPAYERS’ MEETING

Ratepayers in north Rangitikei will hold a meeting on Friday, November 10 in the Town Hall supper rooms, Taihape. to discuss the bridges’ loan and other county matters including rating on unimproved or capital value. Catchment Board affairs in so far as they accept the county will be discussed. The meeting was to have been held on November 3, but has been postponed for a week. HEAVY HAIL STORM A heavy hail storm was experienced in various parts of the Taihape district on Saturday afternoon being particularly severe in the Ridge Road, Papakai Road and parts of Raukura. The storm lasted for over an hour and, according to one settler, the hailstones were so big that he feared that they might break the windows of his house. Fortunately his fears were groundless. AMATEUR ATHLETICS At a recent meeting of the Taihape Amateur Athletic Club presided over by Mr. K. Kelly in the unavoidable absence of the president, Mr. W. Pine, it was decided to start the twilight meetings tomorrow. Mr. D. M. Harris, N.Z. middle distance runner was present to discuss the question of whether the Army at Waiouru would form a club of its own or combine with the Taihape A.A. Club. Messrs Harris and Couzens (Waiouru Military Camp) were appointed members of the executive committee of the club. The matter of the Army joining the club is to be referred to Army athletes at Waiouru. It is hoped to hold an inter-club meeting at Taihape on December 9, and Clem Parker and his sister, New Zealand sprint champions, have accepted an invitation to compete. The club will visit Waiouru on December 3 for a training run. TAIHAPE GUN CLUB Shooting the possible of 21 birds with the first barrel every time, J. B. Thomasen won the championship of the Taihape Gun Club at the shoot held at Ohotu on Sunday. His performance, which included perfect timing, was the best seen in the club for many years. The C.A.C. Cup (21 birds) was won by the president of the club, Mr. D. Missen, who also shot the possible. He gained further honours by winning the club’s double rise championship with 17 out of a possible of 20 birds. In presenting the championship cup to Mr. J. B. Thomasen, the president congratulated him on his success and also took the opportunity of thanking the ladies for providing luncheon and afternoon tea. "When our shooting is up to the same high standard as the catering we will all be champions,’’ remarked the president. The C.A.C. Cup was presented to Mr. Missen by Mr. H. A. Belk, who complimented the president on his fine performance. Perfect weather conditions prevailed for the championship shoot and scores were highly satisfactory. Detailed results are as follows: —

The Keesing Cup match between Taihape and Wanganui East (holders) will be played at Wanganui on November 5. The Taihape team will consist of J. McCullough, H. S. Marsh, C. Murphy and A. Barnett. HOCKEY DANCE. The Taihape Hockey Association held a dance in the Drill Hall on Friday evening, when the trophies won during the year were presented by the Mayor, Mr’ E. Loader. The cun for the women’s competition was won by Whiti-Tama and the Hutchings Rose Bowl for the men's competition went to Army A, who also won the trophy for the men’s seven-a-side tourney. The prize for the women's seven-a-side was won by Pakeha A. Tire music for the dance was provided by Mr De?. George. The M.C. was Mr Lionel Howard. PERSONAL. Senior-Sergeant R. Griffith, of the Taihape Police Force, leaves tomorrow for Nelson on annual leave. Sergeant L. W.
