SOCIAL AND PERSONAL. Mrs S. R. Oliver, Hawera, is spending a few days in Wanganui. Miss A. McCarthy, Victoria Avenue, returned at the week-end from Christchurch. Mr and Mrs T. H. Davison, Westmere, who have been on holiday in Australia returned on the “Dominion Monarch.” Mrs A. M. Caird, president of the Wanganui Presbyterian Association, left by last night’s express for Auckland to attend the P.W.M.U. annual conference and Presbyterian General Assembly. Mis. G. E. .Cutfield, Grey Street, has had as her guests her niece, Mrs Ralph Goodwin, Mr Goodwin and their four-year-old daughter Philippa, from Bangkok. Mrs Goodwin (nee Miss Marjorie Cameron) spent her school days in Wanganui having attended the Gins’ College. Mr. and Mrs Goodwin are on three months’ leave and are touring the North Island in their car and have left Wanganui for Te Kuitl en route for farther north. They will return to Bangkok about the middle of November by air. Dr. A. G. Butchers (Wellington), head of the Correspondence Schools, and chairman of the junior Red Cross Council, and Mrs Butchers, arrived in Wanganui last evening for a short visit and are the guests of Mr. and Mrs W. J. Robinson, Grey Street. This afternoon they will be the guests of Miss Baker, principal of the Girls’ College, at afternoon tea and afterwards will address the members of the Wanganui Junior Red Cross in the Red Cross Rooms. In the evening they will be entertained by Mr. and Mrs. Dyson, of the N.Z. Friends’ School, St. John’s Hill. Friday’s Shop Day. The Ladies’ Auxiliary of the Y.M.C.A. will hold a shop day on Friday in the 2nd N.Z.E.F. Rooms from 10 a.m, m aid of Y.M.C.A. funds. Goods of all kinds will be on sale. Contributors to the various stalls, including r reduce, cakes, clothing, will be gratefully received. Card Evening The Wanganui Women’s Bowling Club weekly card evening was held on Monday night. At the winning table were Mrs Biggs, Mrs Farr and Mrs Gichard. The points prize went to Mrs Newrick, the floating prize to Mrs Smyhe, Mrs Rivers and Mr. Rivers, and the consolation to Mrs Scott. Mrs Connors won the mystery prize. Pre-Wedding Parties. Miss Betty Cole, daughter of Mr and Mrs Edward Cole, Caius Avenue, has been the guest of honour at a number of pre-wedding parties. Hostesses were Mrs J. Pettigrew, who gave a gift afternoon, Mrs D. E. Cole and Miss Molly Bignell, who arranged a “pink and green evening,” Mrs C. R. Davies, to whose party the guests brought gifts for the pantry. Mrs J. H. Henson and Mrs M. G. Bignell invited many friends to a gift afternoon, and a ' laundry’’ party was given by Mrs E. B. Tustin and Mrs. R. Falconer.

Mothers Helpers’ Society. At a committee meeting of the Wanganui Mothers' Helpers’ Society, Mrs A. H. Mac Lean presided over Mesdames T. F. Latham, C. R. White, E. B. E. Walpole, E. Allan and Mackay. Members stood in silence as a mark of respect for a former member, Mrs C. A. Piper, whose death occurred last week. Members expressed appreciation of all the work Mrs Piper had done for the society and spoke of her enthusiasm for any cause in which she had been interested. She was the society’s delegate to the Crippled Children Society, and also a member of the Women's Auxiliary of that society. An appeal was received from the Crippled Children Society to man a table in Harman’s. An appeal was aLc received from the Registered Nurses for donations towards their garden party, also one from the Y.M.C.A. Women’s Auxiliary asking for help for their shop day.

Sympathy was expressed with Mrs F. C. Jannmgs in her illness. Mrs Mac Lean gave the monthly report of the Town and Country Residential Nursery, and said a shop day is to be held this month to raise funds for the purchase of a fridg. for the nursery Mrs Latham, secretary, gave a report of the activities for the month.
