AWAPUNI CONTINGENT LEAVES FOR RICCARTON AFTER GOOD GALLOPS
PALMERSTON N., Last Night (Sp) —Awapuni horses which are to race at the New Zealand Cup meeting left for Riccarton today. Thev were tn*Cup horses, Biassea and Earldale. Voltaic and Infinity (which will race in the Stewards’ Handicap), Felicitous and Hutton (Derby candidates), and Earl Denby and Arcara. With them was Royal Bouquet from Woodville. They were out at Awapuni before leaving for Wellington and their trials were among the best seen for many months.
The trial grass was open, with the going faster following the rain, and the times were really good. Other good trials included those ot Mission and Imperial and Mercian Lad and Battle Strife. Mission, Mercian Lad and Battle Strife will race in the Stratford Handicap, won last year by Battle Strife. Hutton (R. D. Samson), Biassed (G. R. Tattersail) and Earldale (G. Dulieu) worked splendidly over just under a mile and three furlongs. The pace was bn right from the start for they ran the first three furlongs in 37. From the mile peg they were steadied a shade, but they ran the last seven in 1.35, six in 1.21 2-5, five in 1.7 2-5, and the last three in 40 to complete the last mile in 1.47 3-5. Hutton and Biassed were in front oi Earldale at the post, but all three were going well. Hutton’s form at Trentham suggests that he will be one of the hardest to beat in the Derby. Felicitous (R. Dulieu) and Arcara , (V. J. Sellars) were sent along over a mile and were not ridden out to run the last seven in 1.33. They travelled fast along the back and it was that burst of speed which gave them 1.4 3-5 for the last five. Felicitous is in great order for the Derby. Mercian Lad (J. Harris) and Battle Strife (J. Garth) were associated in a fine trial over a mile. They began well and ran the first five in 1.6 3-5. They were home strongly in 38 3-5 to complete in 1.45 1-5, the last six in 1.18 1-5 and the last five in 1.4 3-5. BEST MILE OF MORNING The best mile was probably that of Mission (W. L. Aitken) and Imperial (G. R. Tattersail). They ran the full distance in 1.44. Mission was about a head in front at the post, but he was on the inner and Imperial was going very easily over the last bit. They ran the last three in 39, five in 1.4 2-5, the last six in 1.18 2-5 and the last seven in 1.30 3-5. It was a great gallop. Voltaic (Samson) sprinted five furlongs on his own in 1.3, the last three in 38. He would have gone faster in company. He is in great order for Riccarton. Minion (R. Gibson) is a good track worker. He ran seven in 1.33 1-5. Hunting Fort (B. Wood) slipped over three in 36 2-5, and Aureomycin (A. Temperton) and Hazaan (W. J. Broughton) three in 35 3-5. Britovite (A. Midwood) and Ngakoti (O’Neill) ran six in 1.19 3-5, neither being under pressure. Silver Pal (Whittie), Kippo (J. Carter) and Hadfield (O’Neill) were in that order at the end of a mile run in 1.48. They covered the last five in 1.6 3-5. Jangada (Wood) and Divided (R. McCullough) were k€pt to an even pace over a mile and were home easily in 41 to complete in 1.48 3-5. High Spin (Tattersail) and Perigee (Broughton) sprinted half a mile in 53 1-5, and Noble Prince (Mrs Christmas) and Eastern Queen (Aitken) ran three in 36 1-5. * Hunting Scholar (Tattersall) and Master Scholar (Aitken) were timed to run the last three in 36 4-5. Beauform (Garth) and Calm Play (Ryan) worked well over five in 1.5 1-5, coming home fast in 38 3-5. Miss Wynyard (Broughton) and Gay Aurora (J. Carter) went really well over half a mile in 50 4-5.
