Locke Returns Par Figures In Atrocious Weather
CHRISTCHURCH, Last Night (PA) —A. D. (Bobby) Locke, the British open golf chamipon of 1949 and 1950, scored well with a scratch round of 73 in an exhibition match at Shirley today. Locke was partnered by C. W. Caldwell, Christchurch Club captain, and played against the New Zealand amateur champion, D. L. Woon, and the Christchurch Club’s professional, R. H. Glading. Locke and Caldwell won two up and one to play. Locke’s round was an excellent effort in the atrocious conditions, his work around the greens being extremely sound. Caldwell completed the round in 76, Glading in 76, and Woon in 77. The match was played in heavy rain and a strong south-west wind. The attendance was about 150. With a little -more luck with his putting Locke might easily have scored better. Some of his drives were faulty, but he could be excused for these faults as the weather was bad and he was affected by the cold wind. Locke putted much better on the Shirley greens, which he considered were the best he had played, on in New Zealand.
