RUSSIA CALLS FOR EMERGENCY MEETING OF SECURITY COUNCIL

NEW YORK, Oct. 29 (Recd. 7pm). —Russia today asked for an emergency secret meeting of the United Nations Security Council, presumably to discuss the election of a new Sec-retary-General. The United States delegate, Mr Warren Austin, who is Council President for October, immediately summoned an 11-nation group to meet tomorrow morning. Russia opposes the extension of Mr Trygve Lie’s term, which expires in February.

Nominees proposed by Russia and Nationalist China both failed to obtain more than four affirmative votes. At the last meeting Russia vetoed Mr Lie after he had secured nine votes. The United States has stated it will veto any candidate put up against Mr Lie.
