For the first time in many, many years, Marton is to have a Mayoral election, the sitting Mayor ( Mr. Barton) having as his opponent Mr. W. Meads. A feature of the local body elections in Wanganui on November 18 will be the unusually large number of independent candidates standing. There are three independents contesting the Harbour Board election and one the Hospital Board. In 1947 there was only one independent, Mr. R. S. Hatriek, who stood for the Harbour Board. Apart from the independents, nominations received yesterday by the returning officer, Mr. C. R. White, are according to tickets previously announced by the Citizens’ Association or the Labour Party. In the Mayoralty contest, the present Mayor, the Hon. W. J. Rogers, M.L.C.. is being opposed by Mr. A. C. Seivewright, who was his opponent in 1947. Nominations which closed with Mr. White yesterday were for the Mayoralty, the Wanganui City Council, the Wanganui Harbour Board, the Wanganui Hospital Board and the Wanga-nui-Rangitikei Power Board. Twenty-four nominations have been received for 12 vacancies on the City Council, including 11 sitting members. The only one who is retiring is Cr. W. S. N. Rennie. He has served on the council as a Citizens’ Association nominee for a succession of terms. Considerable interest will be taken in the Harbour Board election.
