Mutilated Bodies Of South Koreans Found In North
SEOUL, Oct 16 (Recd 6.40 pm).— The mutilated bodies of 500 South Korean prisoners of war were found at Yongchung on the east coast yesterday. The twisted fire-blackened corpses were lying in ditches and trenches dug in an apple orchard. A strong South Korean patrol raced westward in an attempt to save some 1000 American prisoners from a similar fate. Unconfirmed reports said the Americans were seen in a railway tun-
nel 17 miles south-east of Yonghung. Two survivors said the North Koreans committed the mass murder early on October 13. Eight hundred South Korean prisoners had begun the trek northward in the middle of September. Three hundred died of malnutrition or were killed on the way. The remaining 500 were shot when they reached Yonghung. Those not killed by bullets were buried alive. —United Press.
