Keen followers of the racing game may be interested to know just how much money can be lost on hot favourites who are defeated, as was the case at Trentham on Saturday when Wandering Ways was beaten into third place in the Desert Gold Stakes and Beaumaris failed to finish in the first five in the Wellington Handicap. Of the £9434 invested on the win pool for the Desert Gold Stakes more than half—£so90— w r as on Wandering Ways, as against £983 on the ultimate winner, Zenith, who was second favourite. The respective pools on the Wellington Handicap were £10,102 10s (win) and £15421 10s (place). Beaumaris carried £3059 10s and £2692 10s, and The Laird, who was 2/2 in the betting, £1265 10s and £1944, as against £219 and £652 on the winner, Renowned. Of the £21,227 invested on the double £6lOO was entrusted to Beaumaris and £3511 to The Laird, as against £421 on Renowned.
