GREY BOOTS FAVOURITE FOR THE CAULFIELD CUP
MELBOURNE, Oct. 16 (Recd. 7.5 pm).—Lincoln, winner of last year’s Caulfield Cup, may not start next Saturday. The horse is sore in front and his trainer, Lou Robertson, said that at the moment there seemed little chance of his running. Robertson said he would continue treating Lincoln with the hope of getting him to the post. Lincoln has been heavily supported straight out and in doubles. Last Saturday he came from a long way back to finish well in the Toorak Handicap, and his backers were confident he would do much better over the extra half-mile of the Cup. After his brilliant win in the Toorak Handicap Grey Boots has been installed favourite for the Caulfield Cup at less than double figures. Lead- j ing bookmakers, however state that they will gamble against’ him as he ; has not yet won beyond a mile. His, finishing effort last Saturday, how- j ever, indicated that he should not be ' troubled by the extra half-mile. Should a ballot be necessary for the : Cup there is a possibility that Grey : Boots may be balloted out. Under ; the balloting clauses a horse which. has never won or been placed beyond ' a mile may be eliminated. After his second in the Herbert Power Handicap last Saturday Peer- 1 less Fox has been installed second I favourite for the Melbourne Cup. He 1 went right out of favour owing to ; poor form following an injury in a | race. His performance on Saturday i was his best since he won the Ade- ! laide Cup in May. Indian Chief ran a record gallop j for six furlongs on the steeplechase j grass at Caulfield on Saturday. He i ran the distance in 1.141—a quarter of a second better than the previous record by Radiant Star.
