QUEEN MARY LENDS HER FAN

LONDON, Watching tennis at Wimbledon and fanning herself with a newspaper in the heat of the afternoon sun, Mrs Karla Gerke, who, until last year was non-playing captain of the Czech team, heard a voice say: “This will be better for you, my dear.” Turning, Mrs Gerke found 83-year-old Queen Mary leaning across from the Royal box, offering her fan. And Mrs Gerke, whose husband was formerly first secretary of the Czech Legation, accepted it gratefully, while Queen Mary moved from the sun’s fierceness to the back of the royal box. When the sun sank lower Mrs Gerke returned the fan to Queen Mary.
