TROTTING MEETING

Many Suits And Coats Worn Beautiful weather prevailed for the first day of the Wanganui Trotting Club's meeting on Saturday. The dressing was unusually varied for while some women, mindful of the vagaries of spring weather, wore tweed suits, warm coats or fur wraps, others chose lightweight ensembles or 1 wo-piece suits, and some, more trusting, appeared in lightweight wooilen and georgette frocks with which were worn straw hats in the new season’s styles. Grey, in varying shades, combined wit.. a touch of colour— cerise, blue, petunia, gold or pastel green, was in the forefront of popular choice, with blues, in shades from light to dark, a close second. Alsu favoured were browns and greens in several tonings. one or two green outfits being in a levt iy soft shade of rew crocus leaf and others in greenygrey moss colour. Mulberry, wine, black, mauve, black and white, cerise and red were among other colours worn, while several favoured the offwhite shade. Furs were much in evidence and proved an accessory which lent an added smartness to many an ensemble and suit. Frock styles featured knifepleated skirts, and two-piece suits had peplum jackets. Stripes were seen on some suits, and were used for jackets worn with a plain skirt. One short jacket in grey featured a cape effect back and was worn with a black frock and hat. Grey suits were frequently accented with lizard skin handbag anc shoes, Handbags and shoes formed a harmony of colour on some outfits, and other suits were allied with blouse and gloves in contrasting shade. A fewbeautiful coats seen on the lawn included squirrel fur and mink. Hats were varied. There were felts, berets, straw models in the new season’s styles, some in draped effect and others worn off the forehead. Several of the younger patrons wore off-the-face crocheted hats and a few dispensed with headgear altogether. Mrs A. J. Walters Hodder, wife of the president of the Trotting Club wore a pale grey wool georgette suit, grey fur felt up-turned brim hat trimmed at the side with velvet grapes and osprey feather. Her furs were of double silver fox. In the luncheon room, the tables were decorated with bowls of peach blossom as centrepieces, with low bowls of polyanthus. Other flowers used were flowering currant and different blossoms arranged in tall vases, and the pillars in the room were decorated with greenery.
