Condliffe, of Virginia Road, St. John’s Hill, leaves tomorrow for a visit to Auckland. womenYTnstitutes Aramoho At the Aramoho meeting of the Aramoho Women’s Institute Centre, “Grandmother’s Day” was celebrated. The president, Mrs A. Greig, presented all the grandmothers with posies-. Mrs Webb-Jones had the honour of being the only great-grandmother present. A demonstration was given by Mrs Ford cn the mak’.ng cf a wool mop. Miss Georgetti read rhe thought for the month, followed by a roll call “My favourite occupation” by members. Competition results were: Knitted bed jacket, Mrs Wells 1, Mrs Seddon 2. Madiera cake, Mrs Gillum 1. Girdle scones, Mrs Lichfield, Miss Georgetti 2. Best bloom, Miss I. Stanton 1, Mrs. Dempsey 2.
Westmere
The October meeting of the Westmere Women’s Institute was held a week earlier than usual because of the half-yearly council meeting being held on the usual day. The attendance was not as large as usual and was presided over by Mrs Dyson, who welcomed all, especially the guest speaker for the afternoon, Mr. Mete Kingi Takarangi. Mr. Takarangi took members back to the early history of Wanganui and to the customs and lives of the Maori people, also telling what a great weather prophet and a heralder ot visitors a certain bird was to the ola Maori people. By the bird’s actions they would know days ahead that visitors were coming and from which direction. Mrs F. Laird continued the Golden Thread with a quiz on names, places and dates of early N.Z. history, many members having their memories ot school history lessons recalled. Miss Mary Litchfield’s dancing items were appreciated as she had come forward at a moment's notice to fill a gap which had unavoidably occurred. The hostesses were Mesdames Carpenter, I Russell, Warren and Miss Golding, i Competition winners were: Best collection of named native trees, Mrs Farley 1. Best flower, Mrs R. S. Taylor 1, Mrs Mogridge 2.
Fordell
There was a good attendance at the monthly meeting in the Church Hall. Mrs Kandell extended a welcome to all, especially the Federation members who were paying their annual visit. It being “Scottish Day” Mrs Christie read the motto:—“Oh wad some power the giitee gie us, to see oursel’s as ithers see us.” Miss Christie then conducted ar. amusing roll call of Scottish jokes. Mrs Lee gave a golden thread, taking as her subject Denham College in England which is run by, and for institute members. Scottish songs were the theme of a community sing which everyone entered into with much gusto. The federation president, Mrs Brownlie, gave a short talk on institute affairs. Mesdames Bruce and Howie were willing to be the delegates to the halfyearly council meeting to be held at Westmere. Recipients of birthday flowers were Mesdames Doughty, Hooper, Lloyd, Lloyd jun., and Randell. The results of the various competitions were:— Vase of daffodils. Mrs Rowan 1, Mrs Christie 2, Mrs Morgan 3. Three pieces of shortbread. Mrs Rowan 1, Mrs Bruce 2, Mrs Rendell 3. Best bloom, Miss Fiyger 1, Mrs Hucker 2 Mrs Howie 3.
