Biassed And Air Belle Win Totalisator Double At Masterton Spring Meeting
(Special Reporter)
Winner of the Winter Cup at Bicearton in August and more recently second m successive starts at Marton and Otaki, Biassed on Saturday registered a convincing performance to win the Masterton Handicap, principal event at the Masterton RacingClub’s spring meeting.
The open sprint, the Solway ” Handicap, was won by Air Belle, who was having her first race since Easter but showed her usual brilliance to lead all the way. The weather was ideal and the wellgrassed course was fast. As expected, there was a large attendance, and the totalisator handled £57,999 10s» including £5662 for the double, compared with £49.847 10s last year. CH the 11,324 ten-shilling doubles tickets 3165 were on the chances of Biassed, of these 461 were reinvested on Air Belle, the return for £1 being £2O SsAfter Eastern Monarch had finished first in the Champion Hack Handicap an inquiry was opened into allegations of interference over the Concluding stages of the race. The inquiry was a protracted one. but at the conclusion the judicial committee announced that, after hearing the evidence of all the parties con- ( cerned they found that there was not i sufficient evidence of interference by i Eastern Monarch with Hoeroa to jus- ' tify an alteration of the judge’s placings. BIASSED'S GOOD FINISH I With a paralysing run down the. outer over the final stages of the Masterton Handicap, the favourite Biassed scored a popular win. It was a rough race and Birdman • was lucky to escape a fall early. A ! little later Earldale, stablemate of the winner, was also in bother. Biassed was eight places back at the seven furlongs and had not improved his position at the half-mile, but he ran the field down in the straight and, sitting against him over the last fur-, long, his rider was content to win by a margin of nearly two lengths. Count Bian finished very solidly and edged | Beau Bijou out of second place. A last-minute run carried Earldale into fourth place. Renowned died over the last bit but was fifth, with the pacemaker. Snow Saint, and Birdman next to finish. AIR BELLE BRILLIANT | Leaving the mark with great brilliance, Air Belle was never headed in the Solway Handicap. Over the early stages Air Belle ■ was attended by Subtraction, Pierre, i Denote, Tranquil Gold and , Voltaic,' but with three furlongs to run Tranquil Gold was her nearest attendant,! and Voltaic, Pierre and Trafalgar Day were all handy. Air Belle held her! own in the run home to win by just' over a length, and Tranquil Gold • was three-quarters of a length ahead of the fast-finishing Signify. Then came Pierre, Voltaic and Livre d’Or. DOWRY’S HIGH W EIGHT Getting a run through on the rails on the home turn, Dowry gained a winning advantage in the opening event, the Blairlogie Handicap, and paid double figures. Dowry was hotly challenged by Britovite over the final furlong and a half, but the three-year-old could not quite bridge the gap and Dowry had a head to spare at the post. Warsong also fought out the issue over the final part and’ was half a length back, third. Niloch and Show Mist each made up ground to be fourth and fifth respectively, and nearest otj the others were Gangetic and Tremellow. TRIAL STAKES DIVISIONS Sir Rhodes won the first division of the Trial Stakes and Linkman, from the Dowry stable, won the second. Phil’s Girl led early in the first division but once in line Fair Magic got to the front. She was winner at the furlong, where Sir Rhodes was running about, but, ridden with vigour, he got to the leader and won. going away, by nearly a length. Miss Bun, third, was two lengths away, and Red Tip and Fashion Court were next. A good clear run on the inner enabled Linkman to run down the early leader, Ngatere, in the second division, and he was a length in front of the outsider at the finish. Inquisition was two lengths back and then came Coralline and Red Diamond. SMART GOLD NIB FILLY Showing great speed, the Gold NibArgovie filly Scorned easily won the Nursery Handicap and looks like carrying on now that she has struck form. After allowing Stellaway to show her the way to the straight, Scorned ran past, striding away to win comfortably by nearly two lengths and give her place supporters less than their money back. Stellaway was ft length ahead of an outsider in Reporter. and Dwight, who had to make up a good deal of ground, was fourth. Poetical and Aureomycin (who was forced out wide on the turn) were close up. followed by Grenadier (badly away) and Toparoa. EMOTIONAL COMFORTABLY From the same stable as Biassed, Emotional, a three-year-old Timanova filly, won the Gladstone Hack Handicap after a keen tussle with Anvil Song. Shinrone. Happy Man and Fortune carted the field along early, but Emotional and Anvil Song, who followed the leaders into the stra ght, ran past at the final furlong. Emotional drew out to have a break of a length which Anvil Song could not quite overtake. Fortune battled on for third, with Aurora and Happy Man next to finish. SURVIVED AN INQUIRY Eastern Monarch won the Champion Hack Handicap but had to survive a protracted inquiry for alleged interference before the Otaki stable of W. McEwan could claim the prize. Regency Buck had charge at the five furlongs and led into the straight from Sea Shanty, Parrworth, Hoeroa, Confetti and Eastern Monarch. Confetti reached the front a furlong from the line and Eastern Monarch challenging on the outside and Hoeroa j coming through to take on the leader.
Eastern Monarch appeared to change ' his course and Hoeroa had to be I checked. Eastern Monarch going on jto win by a length. Hoeroa llnished fast for third and Parrworth was a fair fourth, ahead of Milosh, Notturna and Claymore. ROYAL MAN AT SHORT PRICE Backers accepted a short price about Royal Man in the final event, but the Royal Chief colt had to produce his best to hold Hutton off by a head. i Royal Man. fourth at the home . turn, and Hutton, slow to leave the I mark, had worked their way to the 1 front at the final furlong and they fought out the finish. A last desperate effort enabled Royal Man o get a I head decision. High Spot, over a I length away, hung on for third. Eastern Queen came home well for fourth ahead of Lady Palm. • Details of results:— Blairlogie Highweight (Of £300; one mile) • 6/B—Dowry, 9.5, K. Nuttall 1 11/1 —Britovite, 10.0, A.
