APPLICATIONS FOR FARM GRADING WILL CLOSE ON MARCH 31

PARLIAMENT BLDGS., Oct. 5, (O.C.).—Ex-servicemen still wishing to apply for rehabilitation land settlement assistance will have to lodge their applications for farm grading before March 31, 1951. This has been decided by the Rehabilitation Board after full consideration and following discussion with rehabilitation farming sub-committees throughout New Zealand. The decision is in line with a resolution passed by the Dominion Council of the New Zealand Returned Services’ Association in June of this year. The decision means that ex-service-men, who are not yet graded for farm settlement assistance and who are eligible to receive such aid, will not be able to apply for participation in ballots for land for ex-servicemen’s settlement or for a rehabilitation loan to buy an existing single-unit farm unless they have lodged applications for grading before March 31, 1951. Existing rights of all ex-servicemen who at present hold the “A” grade certificate will be fully protected. Applications for grading after March 31 next are to be allowed only where the ex-serviceman concerned can show that, through being in hospital or being released late from the forces or through some other exceptional circumstances acceptable to the board, he was unable to apply before the final date. Explaining the reason for the step, the Minister of Rehabilitation (Mr. MacDonald) as chairman of the Rehabilitation Board, said today that the board considered that ex-servicemi n who were genuinely interested in settling on the land have had ample time since their discharge from the forces to indicate their interest by lodging their applications for grading. The board also appreciated that at some future time the Government must consider implementing a genera: civilian land settlement scheme. It was essential, therefore, to have an accurate total of the ex-servicemen still to be settled so that the task ot settling them could be planned.
