NEW YORK EXPRESS HITS PETROL CAR; MANY PEOPLE HURT
NEW YORK. Oct. 6 (Recd. 6pm).— At least 37 persons were injured today when the New York Central express, running at 80 miles an hour, slammed into a derailed petrol tank car which exploded with a brilliant flash. “It was just a blockbuster going off,” said a former bomber pilot who was driving near the scene, which was at Erie, Pennsylvania. Flaming petrol was sprayed over the express’s 14 carriages. The first of the express’s two diesel locomotives overturned and 11 carriages were derailed. Only the all-steel construction of the carriages prevented a heavier casualty toll.
