Mr C. R. White has been re-elected president of the Wanganui Justices of the Peace Association. Lieutenant B. Seccombe, of First] Battalion Wellington-West Coast and Taranaki Regiment, has been promoted to captain, states the New Zealand Gazette. The president of 'the Wanganui A. and P. Association, Mr N. Neilson, and the secretary. Mr F. H. Donaldson, are to attend the Hawke’s Bay Spring Show on October 18 and 19. Mr R. Hogg, liaison officer for Victoria University College, is visiting Wanganui secondary schools to interview sixth form pupils who intend taking up university courses next year. Mr G. S. Fry. who has been a member of the staff of the Bank of New Zealand in Hawera for the past 16 years, has been transferred to the bank’s Ashburton branch. He will bo succeeded by Mr A. K. Furrie, of Palmerston North. Mr J. H. F. Hamel, well known in the drapery business in Dunedin, died yesterday morning at. ’the age of 84 years. He was prominent in the Manchester Unity Independent Order of Oddfellows, a member of the Dunedin Savings Bank trustees and chairman for a term. At one time he was prominent in the Liberal Party. Mr D. Borman (Christchurch) was elected president of the New Zealand Journalists’ Association at the annual conference yesterday. Other officers elected were: Vice-president, Mr D. K. Gunn (Wellington); trustees, Messrs Borman and G. Towart (Christchurch). Mr'J. A. Bryers severed his connection with the teaching staff of the Gonville School yesterday and was farewelled at a gathering of teachers and members of the committee. Mr Bryers is returning to Ohakune to take up a position on the staff of the Ohakune District High School. He was coach of the Pirates senior Rugby team this season. Mr A. L. Neighbour, aged 36, secretary of 'the Thames Hospital Board, died yestereday. Mr Neighbour was appointed assistant-secretary to the board in 1938 and upon the retirement of the late Mr G. Tonge was appointed secretary. He was also secretary of 'the Thames Rotary Club, a member of the board of managers of the Presbyterian Church, and a member of the Masonic Lodge. Mr W. Austin, of Auckland, is visiting Wanganui. He was one of the Wanganui Rugby team which played against the first British side to tour New Zealand in 1888. On the occasion of the recent visit of the British Isles team to Wanganui, the Wanganui Rugby team sent a telegram of greetings to Mr. Austin. He is staying with his daughter, Mrs H. Groves, Koromiko Road.
