Wandering Ways, Winner Of Marton Sprint, May Be Early Weight-For-Age Winner
(By
“Kestrel”)
One of the most impressive wins at Marton last Saturday was that registered by Wandering Ways in the Flying Handicap, for she scored handsomely in good time in spite of the fact that Biassed got within half a length of her at the rinish.
Wandering Ways was having her first start in the current season and her forward display will draw attention to the filly’s prospects when she lines up for the Desert Gold Stakes at Trentham next month. Wandering Ways was backed down to each-way favouritism in spite of the fact that she bad no't raced since last season and, being privately trained at Pihama had not been seen on the Taranaki tracks. That the judgment of bettors was not misplaced was evident, from the result. The win dividend shared by her supporters was probably more generous than they expected, but was brought about by fairly even support for several of the runners.
Great Queen was the only one of the sprint field drawn outside Wandering Ways, who dwelt slightly when the tapes went up. as also did Biassed and Voiron. The filly was given time to settle down and then commenced to make up leeway, though she was not. in the first eight when Buchanan led past the half-mile. She had worked her way up crossing the top to trail Blue Skimmers into the straight, and a furlong off the post she ran into a clear lead. Though she was under a hold at this stage and was doing it nicely, she had to be shaken up when Biassed made a late dab. Still, she won with something in reserve, and it is this fact which is certain to influence her supporters over a distance later on.
Wandering Ways is a half-sister, by Instinct, to the Great Northern Oaks winner Napred.ak, the pair being from the Surveyor mare Wandering, from Walkeaway by General Latour from Olson, by Apremont from the Nordenfeldt mare Meronser.
Last season Wandering Ways won three races jn four starts beating some of the useful two-year-olds in Ciassowa, Magnate and Ptolemy. She may prove one of the best fillies of her year.
