MARAETAI MAY RUN EARLY NEXT YEAR
AUCKLAND, Last Night (PA).— "Engineers are very hopeful that early in 1952 they will get a run out of the first generators at Maraetai,” said the Minister in Charge of the State Hy-dro-Electric Department (Mr. Goosman) tonight.
“The Whakamgru project is slightly ahead of schedule,’’ he added. Mr. Goosman, who was speaking at the opening of the Auckland Electric Power Board's building at Newmarket. said he had visited Maraetai, Whakamaru and Wairakel this week with the Commissioner of Works (Mr. McKillop) and the General Manager of the State Hydro-Electric Department (Mr. Davenport).
"I want to invite the people of New Zealand to go to their hydro-electric schemes and look over them,’’ said Mr. Goosman. “They have to be seen to be believed. Guides are at the works and anyone can arrange to be taken over. I want the people to realise what enormous jobs they are.
Speaking of the terrific difficulties that had to be overcome at. Maraetai, l-.e said that 10,000 tons of cement had been poured into the banks between which a dam would be built in order io fill up the crevices.
