Move To Combat Illegal Exchange Charges For Imports
WELLINGTON, Yesterday.—ln the House of Representatives today, Mr T. H. McCombs (Opp., Lyttelton) asked the Minister of Customs, Mr Bowden, if he was aware of the practice of some importers of arranging for an overcharge by agents overseas in order to obtain overseas exchange illegally, as alleged by the Prime Minister in a statement to a meeting this week of the United Kingdom Manufacturers and New Zealand Representatives’ Association. “Will the Minister arrange that all future import licences are refused to persons guilty of such practices?” asked Mr McCombs. Mr T. P. Paikea (Opp., Northern Maori) asked the Minister in Charge of State Advances. Mr Marshall, for an assurance that when the allocation of State housing units is being made, there will be no racial discrimination through allocating an undue proportion of new sub-standard transit houses to Maoris.
