Mulloy In Semi-Finals Of U.S. Tennis Singles

NEW YORK. Sept. 2 (Recd. 6 p.m.) —Gardnar Mulloy, "the iron man’’ of American tennis, today entered the semi-finals of the United States lawn tennis championships by defeating Earl Cochell 6-3, 7-5, 6-2. Mulloy, fit and hard at 36, gave more than he took in a match of power tennis. He won because he kept his head better than the agile, stocky and demonstrative Cochell. In the womens singles quarterfinals M ; ss Nancy Chaffee defeated Miss Barbara Scofield 6-2, 6-2, and Miss Beverly Baker defeated Miss Betty Rosenquest 6-2, 9-7.
