OBITUARY

Miss Emily Richardson An important link yith early colonial history has been severed with the passing of Miss Emily Richmond, the youngest and last surviving of the nine children of th e late Mr. Justice Richmond. Miss Richmond’s father came to New Zealand in 1853, and was . j - pointed Provincial Attorney and Clerk at the first meeting of the Taranaki Provincial Council. He was later elected to the House of Representatives and rose to Cabinet rank Among the port!olios he held was that of Colonial Secretary and Treasurer under Stafford. After retiring from politics, he was appointed to the Supreme Court Bench and was the first and sole Judge in Dunedin for many years. Miss Richmond was born in 4869, and her mother was a sister of Sir Harry Atkinson, the prominent New Zealand statesman. For nr.nv years Miss Richmondw as the constant companion o r her elder sister. Miss Mary Richmond, who was distinguished for her public work, particularly in the foundation of free kindergartens, and who died last. year. In recent years Miss Emily Richmond had been in the sort in" and compilation of letters dating back to the IR l o’s in th« possession of the Richmond and Atkinson families.
