Value Of Kindergartens Emphasised At Children’s Photo Competition

The value of kindergartens to both mothers and children was emphasised by the d strict school medical officer; of health, Dr. Kathleen Brown, when she opened the Wanganui Free Kindergarten Association conducted children’s photo competition in the D.I.C. yesterday, Declaring that she was happy to open the display as her work brought her in contact with many children of kindergarten age, she said: “Kindergartens have many advantages. They relieve busy mothers of the tie of children during the day. They give young children a chance to meet friends of their own age. High-spirit-ed children have ar outlet for theft energies, and kindergatens form a halfway house between the comparative freedom of the home and the regimentation of the school.

The pres : dent of the association, Miss Joyce Sewell, who introduced Dr. Brown and welcomed the other visitors, said that it was heartening to the organisation that so much interest was being taken in the competition.

“The only shame is that there are not enough kindergartens to go round, not even enough for the children whose photos are in the competition,” she said. There are only 150 children attending kindergartens in Wanganui, while there are 385 entries in the competition. “Naturally, no Government is going to present us with a kindergarten in a parcel if local interest does not do its share Unless local support lends weight to our claims we run the risk of waiting for other towns.” Miss Sewell mentioned the great amount of work that had been put into the competition and thanked the management of the D.I.C. for its cooperation in making the space available.

Mrs W .J. Rogers, the Mayoress, was also present. The proceedings started with the arrival of Pipe-Major E. C. Morgan and Piper D. Morgan, of the Wanganui Highland Pipe Band, who announced their arrival with a rousing Scottish tune.

Open to parents in the city, the compeition is divided into seven sections for boys and girls between the ages of 6 to 18 months, 18 months to three years, three years to five years, and twins. Winners of the various sections will be decided by popular vote.
