HAWERA HORSES FOR WANGANU MEETING

HAWERA. Yesterday.—ln spite of rain overnight, the course was in good order at Hawera this morning, when final gallops for the first day of the Wanganui meeting were conducted. The pegs were out only a few feet from the inside rail. The two-year-old First Over and Master McGrath were two of the most impressive.

First Over (French) appeared to be holding Gold Chance (Toki) safe at the conclusion of three furlongs in 375. A well-grown son of TimanovaLady Furst, First Over is very forward and should give a good account of himself in the Debutant Stakes. He is badly drawn on the extreme outside, but he begins well and that handicap may not prove too great. Gold Chance is a neat filly by BroiefortNatalenc, and is also fairly forward. Robin Glen (Toki) easily defeated Tokena (Thomas) over five furlongs in 1.5 1-5. Both are in good order. Master McGrath (Mills) and S’trathconan (Belsham) were not after time when traversing six furlongs evenly in 1.21. Master McGra’th is such a consistent gelding that he will command a strong following in the Marangai Handicap. He won easily at New Plymouth last week, and W.-n--ganui has been hi.i favour'te course in the Past. Strathconan seems to be ‘‘field shy” since she was badly injured in a race at Hawera. Her New Plymouth form was well below previous efforts.

Massa (Belsham) finished too solidly for Meg (Meads) to beat her easily at the conclusion of seven furlongs in 1.32. Massa has been disappointing in short races, but he may be an improver over a m’ddle distance. Meg is not a good track galloper. She looks improved by two races at New Plymouth and should giv e a good account of herself in the Seafield Hack Handicap.

Nawadaha (Thomas) jumped off a couple of lengths in advance of Te Kowhai (Belsham) at the half-mile post and they were, in that order throughout, to record 50 3-5. Nawadaha has gone on the right way since his winning debut recently, and he displays more than average promise. He is to race on the second day. Te Kowhai, who is to race at Carterton, has grown into a handsome three- , year-old. Corella (Meynell) and Revelni’ta (French) sprinted half a mll e in 53 3-5. They may need time.

Impulsive and Rfev w g o companions over an easy five furlongs in 1.6. They are progressing very favourably. Vigorous has returned to his former quarters after a beneficial let-up. Lord Manna, who bears a bright appearance, ran three furlongs with Southern Special in 35 3-5. Lord Manna was late in his preparation last year, but he will be well forward at the major fixture this season.
