Mutant Stakes Tomorrow h First Of The Season's Races For Two-year-olds

(By

Kestrel”)

First of the season’s races for two-year-olds, the Debutant Stakes, will provide considerable interest tomorrow as the opening event of the Wanganui Jockey Club’s spring meeting, though ■■ackers will be at a disadvantage in that there will be no public form on which to base their calculations.

Eighteen juveniles, with the sexes equally represented, are engaged, and they represent sixteen sires, with Timanova, standing at the Koatanui Stud, claiming three representatives. The history of the Debutant Stakes does not suggest that it is a reliable guide to two-year-old form for the season, though there have been exceptions when the winner has gone on to register some outstanding performances. One of the first winners was Rational, who was voted one of the best, in a vintage season. Another was Queen March, who went on to win the Welcome Stakes, Royal Stakes and Champagne Stakes at Ellerslie but was downed by the brilliant Tukia in the Great Northern Foal Stakes. Midian was another winner who developed good class, and Korokio registered a win in the New Zealand Oaks in her second season. Last year the Trentham-trained Dark Courage was the winner, and he went on to finish second to Apex I in the Roseneath Handicap at Tren-! tham, later turning the tables on Apex in the Pioneer Handicap at Riccarton. Details of the field for tomorrow, • giving ownership, breeding, trainer ard barrier draw, are as follow: DEBUTANT STAKES (Of £.350; five furlongs) Tony (Hon. W. S. Blue Paper, a winner of 22 races and dam also of Yours and Mine and Blue Chips. Tony was second to the Gold Nib-Aletha colt in the two-furlong sprint at the Awapuni matinee Mi , Tuesday. I Contraband’s sire, Treasure Hunt, also sired last year's winner, Dark Courage. This youngster is closely i related to Black Mint, who w r on the j WhYte Handicap at Trentham, and to j Arch Arnie, a winner of the King i George Handicap at Ellerslie. He i was brought through to Wanganui ' several weeks ago, so should have some experience of the track. Skipalong is not fashionably bred, , his sire, now defunct, being by Solicij tor General from the brilliant Golden ! Pam, and his dam is by Man’s Pa! from Guardianelle. i Volunteer’s dam, Mullion, is by Colossus from the Nassau mare Lubrica- , tion. 1 Fastnet and Monarchy will be ; bracketed on the machine, they being ■ raced by Mr George Covert, of Calii fornia. Fastnet is one of the Timani ova trip and cost 570gns at the sales. ! Bred by Mr G. M. Currie, he is from I the Spiral mare Screen, who is a dei scendant of famous Eulogy. Screen i is closely related to Battlerdress (New Zealand Derby) and to two Oaks winners in Variant and Damar's. Miss Tasta, dam of Monarchy, is a sister to Muriet, dam of the useful Deseado, whose career was cut short by an accident last season. Monarchy was bought for 625gns. Grenadier is a half-brother to Stellar, who won the Debutant Stakes some seasons back for Messrs T. J. and P. A. O'Neill. He cost 350gns last j January. First Over cost 320gns at the sales and will carry the colours of the ' owner-trainer of Robin's Reward and i Peter’s Choice. Lady Furst won nine j races, including the Wellington Han- j dicap at Trentham. i Spry is another of the progeny of | Swift Jay, dam of Alanrn, who won I races last season for G. W. New, now j established at Levin. News Girl cost 160gns as a year- ■ ling. Her dam is an imported mare with good staying lines in her pedi- ’ gree. News Girl was seen out in the parades at the hunt clubs' meeting at Hastings. Bonny Defoe, dam of Princess Loch, is by Defoe from Bon Chic, a mare by Boniform from imported Lady Jean n. Pyramid is another who had a run at the hunt clubs’ parades at Hastings. She was bought last January at 550gns, and her dam, Cincture, was bred at Koatanui, being by Ringmaster from Imposture, another of Eulogy’s descendants. Eulo will attract attention,, as several carrying the same colours have won the Debutant Stakes for Mr Currie. Her dam, Imposture, is a sister to the Oaks winner Premature, being by Posterity from Impetuous, by Limond from Pennon, daughter of Eulogy. Valueen, dam of De Valeur, is by Spear Dance from Value, by Paper Money from Grey Linnet, an imported mare by Thrush. Admiral’s Luck, sire of Admiral’s Blonde, was the leading sire of two-year-olds last season, making his death a serious loss to breeders. Admiral’s Blonde attracted attention in the fillies’ parade at the Grand National meeting at Riccarton, and her outing there should ensure that she is well forward for her initial race. She had a run at 'the matinee meeting at Awapuni on Tuesday. Beniti, who cost 350gns as a yearling, is a half-sister to Gay Cushla and to Gaymiss, winner of seven races. Gold Chance is by Broiefort, whose progeny generally require some 'time, and she is from an Illumination mare.
